Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) chief Peter Lim and Central
Narcotics Bureau (CNB) director Ng Boon Gay are assisting the Corrupt
Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) in a probe into allegations of
'serious personal misconduct', the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)
confirmed on Tuesday.
A statement was released to the media at about 5.30pm, following a report in Chinese language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao earlier on Tuesday alleging that SCDF commissioner Mr Lim and CNB director Mr Ng had been questioned by the CPIB.
Investigations started in late December for Mr Ng and earlier this month for Mr Lim, the MHA statement added. Both were placed on leave when the investigations started.
The MHA also announced that Mr Eric Yap, currently the SCDF's senior director (emergency services), will be appointed Commissioner from Feb 1. It also said Mr Ng Ser Song, currently the director of the police intelligence department, will take over as the CNB director.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean said all public officers, regardless of position or seniority, are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity and conduct. The Government takes a serious view of misconduct of public officers and any allegations will be investigated fully and thoroughly, he pledged.
'We will be fair to officers who are the subject of allegations, establish the facts and follow in due process, acting in accordance with civil service disciplinary processes and the law,' he added.
'If officers are found to have abused the trust placed in them, we will not hesitate to take firm and decisive action against them.'
He added that both will be suspended from their duties from Wednesday, so that new heads can be appointed to ensure leadership continuity.
He concluded: 'I would like to reaffirm my confidence in our SCDF and CNB officers, who are honourable professionals risking their lives on a daily basis to keep our citizens safe and secure.
