CCAB, Wednesday, January 26, 2012 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker
Road) underlined their basketball prowess with an impressive 66-37 win
over Serangoon Garden Secondary in a first-round, Group B tie in the
South Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. With the win, ACS
(Barker) secured a place in the second round of the South Zone
competition.
Despite the loss, Serangoon Garden also qualified for the next stage with ACS (Barker) as a result of their earlier group wins.
Serangoon Garden had kept the game close in the first half, limiting the boys in blue to a 29-21 lead. However, ACS (Barker) then went on a pivotal 19-4 run in the third quarter to virtually seal the game.
ACS(BR) forward Brian Wong (#11) downed 3 three-pointers in the third quarter alone to contribute to his team’s lead. He accounted for 13 of his team’s 19 points in that quarter and eventually finished the game with a game-high 20 points. His teammates Han Xing Jian (#10) and Foo Ce Xian (#14) added another 17 and 14 points respectively.
Despite fielding their bench players late in the fourth quarter, ACS (Barker) continued in a free-scoring vein by posting an 18-12 advantage in the fourth quarter to win the game comfortably.
In other results, Fairfield Methodist Secondary trumped Queenstown Secondary 49-26 in a Group C match to earn a place in the second round of the South Zone competition. Fairfield Methodist jumped to an early 15-0 lead and never looked back, increasing their advantage in every quarter to lead by as many as 28 points in the final quarter.
Pei Cai Secondary were the other qualifiers of Group C, beating National Junior College 57-39 in a surprisingly hard-fought game. Pei Cai had gained the early advantage with 16-4 lead after the first quarter and almost doubled their lead to 29-8 at the end of the first half.
However, NJC went on a full court man-to-man press in the second half and succeeded in disrupting Pei Cai’s offensive flow. NJC went on a 12-7 third quarter run before succumbing 19-21 in the fourth quarter to make the scoreline respectable.
Catholic High maintained their winning run in another Group D match with a big 81-8 win over Outram Secondary.
