After a short break to celebrate the NHL all-star weekend in Ottawa, the puck drops for real again this week ... and if you ask me it couldn't come soon enough.
The regular season needs to resume for no other reason than to remind the legions of hockey fans that watching meaningful games is the only true reality show, and everything else is fluff. Watching the NHL all-star show is now no different than watching an episode of Survivor or The Bachelor. But that's me, I'm old school. Now my intention in writing this piece is not to rip the all-star game, as it has seen enough detractors of late, and to be honest: been there and done that. Besides I shouldn't comment on how bad the game is unless I come up with a better solution, and I wouldn't know where to begin on that. Truth is the current all-star game is so far removed from anything that even remotely resembles real hockey that I believe Steven Spielberg couldn't save it.

However, with investors indulging in some buying at lower levels, the market regained some lost ground and is currently trading marginally up in positive territory.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index, which declined to 8,780 in early trades but rose to 8,826 subsequently, is currently trading at 8,802, up 2.2 points over its previous close.
Sumitomo Heavy Industries, the most prominent loser among Nikkei stocks, is down more than 9.5 percent. Ricoh is down by over 6 percent on weak earnings outlook. Toto, Shinsei Bank, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Sharp Corp, Casio Computer, Advantest Corp and Nissan Chemical Industries are trading lower by 2 to 4.5 percent.
JFE Holdings, Sony Corp, Tokyo Electric Power, Olympus Corp, Pacific Metals, Marui Group, Japan Steel Work and Fast Retailing are among the other notable losers.
All Nippon Airways is gaining nearly 4.5 percent. Mitsui OSK Lines, Konica Minolta, NTT Data Corp, Mitsubishi Paper, Chiyoda, Denso Corp, Mitsubishi Motor, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial, Nippon Yusen and Kawasaki Kisen are up 2 to 3 percent.

Nicole Chua is set to become Singapore's first ever professional female Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter when she makes her debut in the ONE Fighting Championship on 31 March at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The 27-year-old was unveiled on Tuesday at a press conference and will be competing against some of the region's top fighters.
While Chua's MMA debut will create history in the sport, it is her full-time occupation that will truly surprise many.
A full-time accountant by day, the diminutive and sweet looking girl switches from numbers to punches after work, following a strict training schedule with only one rest day per week.
"I train six days a week for around four to six hours a day. So the gym is like a second home to me," said Chua, whose foundation is in Muay Thai.

The fight between Shahrukh Khan and Shirish Kunder at a Juhu nightclub has left the film industry shocked. According to Kunder, Shahrukh cornered him along with his bodyguards and beat him up without any provocation. Kunder alleges that Shahrukh pulled his hair, punched and slapped him. How much truth is there Kunder’s allegation is still to be known, but there is no doubt that a fight between the two did take place at the party hosted by Sanjay Dutt.
Could the spat have been avoided? Shouldn’t the matters been resolved verbally? Here’s how things between Shahrukh and Shirish have been hotting up lately.
Shahrukh Khan and Farah Khan were thick as thieves for fourteen years and she made her directing debut in his production Main Hoon Na and followed it up with Om Shanti Om. But things soured between the two when Farah Khan, apparently prodded by her husband Shirish Kunder, roped in Akshay Kumar and not her favourite Shahrukh Khan for her movie Tees Maar Khan. That apparently sowed the seed of animosity between Shahrukh and Shirish.
Thereafter, Shahrukh and Farah ceased to be on talking terms, let alone meet each other. To rile Shahrukh further, Shirish Kunder became close to the Salman Khan camp. The rift was thus consummated, even though Shahrukh Khan did try to extend an olive branch to Farah Khan on two occasions.
But what ticked off Shahrukh was when Shirish Kunder panned his movie Ra.One on the release day itself.
“I just heard a Rs150 crore firework fizzle” Shirish Kunder had written about ‘Ra.One’ on his Twitter page, with a mocking addition “Ironically #StepsToSurviveAHorrorMovie is trending today!”
To rub salt to the wound, Shirish had added: “Bodyguard is trending...everything else is pending”.
Obviously, Shahrukh Khan wouldn’t have liked his dream project Ra.One being mocked this way, that too by a person he didn’t adore.
Buzz is that there has been rancour in the Shahrukh Khan camp against Shirish Kunder’s jibes at Ra.One. And presumably it all erupted on Sunday night at Sanjay Dutt’s party when Kunder apparently provoked Shahrukh Khan again. The result was Shirish Kunder walking out with a swollen face.

Carolina Panthers’ new logo designed to be ‘more aggressive
For the first time since joining the league in 1995, the Panthers have changed their logo. According to a press release Sunday night, the logo has been designed to provide a “more aggressive, contemporary look to the logo while making it more three-dimensional for ever-increasing digital use.”
The primary tweaks made by the creative department of the National Football League are primarily in the features in the eye and mouth.
Team president Danny Morrison says “we have one of the finest and most recognizable logos in the NFL and wanted to make it as modern as possible without losing the dramatic essence of the mark.”
The team will also change the primary logotype.

WEST PALM BEACH — Lost in Herman Cain’s surprise endorsement of Newt
Gingrich Saturday night at the Kravis Center was a rousing speech by
Rep. Allen West, who received a bigger applause and ovation than either
Gingrich or Cain.
West gave a 10 minute speech at the Lincoln Day Dinner, telling a very approving audience that, “We need to let President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and my dear friend the chairman of the Democratic National Committee (Debbie Wasserman Schultz), let them know Florida ain’t on the table.”
West then told his rivals to, “Take your message of economic dependency, take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else. You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America.”
West was already expected to have a tough reelection campaign, but could find himself in an even more Democratic district because of redistricting. West challenged his rival party.
“This is not about 1 percent or 99 percent. This is about 100 percent,” West said. “This is about 100 percent of America, and I will not stand back and watch anyone defame, degrade or destroy that which my father fought for, my older brother, my father-in-law, my nephew and all my friends in uniform. I will not allow President Obama to take the United States of America and destroy it.
“If that means I’m the No. 1 target for the Democratic party, all I have to say is one thing: Bring it on.”

Thoroughbred racing likes to call itself the Sport of Kings. And for many casual fans who tune in to watch the ponies on television two or three times a year, the track might still seem like a glamorous place, a showcase of beautiful women in ostentatious hats, gardens of gorgeous flowers, and the sheer athletic magnificence of powerful animals bred solely to run a mile and a half (or so) as fast as possible. But not every day is Derby day, and when the millionaire dilettante owners go home and the network trucks pack up their cameras, what we have left is Luck, HBO’s new show about the murky tales that take place in the stables, on the backstretch at dawn, and in the minds of hopeless gamblers. Sports journalist Dick Schaap once described the unique allure of horse racing as “the scent of larceny,” and last night’s pilot was thick with it.
Things are looking up for Chester Bernstein, A.K.A. Ace (Dustin Hoffman) when we first meet him. He’s getting out of jail, but he doesn’t seem too excited by his change in address. Instead, he seems agitated, jumpy, and when he’s picked up by his driver, Gus (Dennis Farina), he’s mostly quiet until he finally asks Gus to get him a tape recorder. Why would a guy named Ace just out of prison want a tape recorder?
Turns out Gus might be the richest chauffeur in California. He won a slot machine jackpot in Vegas when Ace was in the clink, and plunked down $2 million to buy a first-class thoroughbred. How ‘bout that?
Early in the morning, the racetrack at Santa Anita is already alive with action. Trainer Turo Escalante (John Ortiz) is prepping his horses for the day’s races. He flirts with the pretty vet (Jill Hennessy) and barely acknowledges the apprentice jockey assigned to warming up his horse… until the Cajun kid, Leon (Tom Payne), tells him how big he’s going to win this afternoon. Turo snaps at the kid to shut his mouth about any such thing. Turo has plans for this horse -- a longshot -- and the last thing he needs is some “nobody triple-bug apprentice” jockey ruining his action.
Not far away, Walter (Nick Nolte) is prepping his own horse. Walter’s been around, you can tell, but he doesn’t say much -- except to the horse. He’s been pampering this colt, but today is going to be different. “Maybe you let him stretch out a little,” he instructs the pretty Irish exercise rider who hops aboard, careful to look around to make sure no one heard him. Walter retreats to the grandstand with his binoculars and stop-watch and what he sees of his horse takes his breath away. “Guess I still know a peach when I see one,” he says to himself.
Walter isn’t the only one to see something special in his horse. A trio of degenerates gather near the rail, strategizing their day’s bets. They’re aiming for the Pick 6 jackpot -- pick six consecutive winners correctly and win as much as $2.7 million. Jerry (Jason Gedrick) has his picks ready, but there’s a problem. He’s tapped out, broke. Yesterday, he went home with $390 in winnings, and now he’s busted. He tells oxygen-mask Marcus (Kevin Dunn) that he lost the money playing poker at the casino, but take a closer look at Jerry. He looks a little strung out. Is he a bad poker player or does he have other habits that Marcus and the crew aren’t aware of?
To increase their odds of winning, the Degenerates intend to bet on several horses in each race -- except in the fourth race. Bucking conventional wisdom, Jerry thinks Turo’s longshot is a sure-thing. He’s not really betting on the horse, Mon Gateau, or its Cajun rider -- he’s betting on the cagy Turo, who might just have a history of longshots inexplicably paying off. Jerry knows his stuff, he's confident in his selections, but he too is distracted when Walter’s horse barrels around the last turn like a locomotive. Who is that horse?

ASPEN — Like almost every athlete at the
Winter X Games in Aspen, Lange ly McNeal was showing her love for fallen
freeskier Sarah Burke with a white ribbon tied around her leg.
The Idaho skicross racer Sunday night said the ribbon — with the word "Sarah" — forced her disqualification from Sunday's skicross finals after French officials complained that "straps" — McNeal said it was the band and a hair tie on her right boot — violated the X Games' skicross clothing rules.
"It's been a lifelong dream for me to compete in the X Games finals, and for it to be taken from me for something so trivial, it's just breaking my heart," she said. "It's not like I hit someone with my pole or
anything like that. I am so bummed. I'm still stunned. My heart is just breaking right now."Sunday's
race was not part of the International Ski Federation's World Cup,
which closely regulates skicross clothing related to aerodynamics. Chris
Stiepock, vice president of X Games events, said the violation was not
about the Sarah band.
"It had nothing to do with the Sarah banner. It had to do with straps she had on both legs around her boots. I can quote from the rules: 'No straps or fastening devices or other methods can be used to tighten the suit material closer to the body,' " Stiepock said. "We certainly feel bad, but this has nothing to do with the Sarah banner. We have allowed all the athletes to wear those banners without stopping really anybody. This had to do with the fastening devices around her pant legs."
By 8:30 p.m. Sunday — four hours after McNeal was disqualified — a Facebook page titled "Langely's story must be heard! X games can't hide!" had almost 2,000 members.
McNeal was celebrating with friends and family Sunday in the finish corral of the skicross race course after posting a qualifying time in a semifinal that moved the three-time X Games competitor into her first finals. An official approached her and told her not to leave. The French team had lodged a complaint about her clothing.
"At first I thought it was a joke. I was laughing," McNeal said. "It was really poorly handled by the X Games. And a pretty low blow by the French."
When the French complaint bumped McNeal from the finals, French racer Marielle Berger advanced to the finals, where she finished fourth.
"Someone had to move up," Stiepock said.
Stiepock said the French were "within their rights to lodge the complaint."
"They lodged the complaint before they left the finish corral, which is what they are supposed to do," he said. "Regardless of who lodged the complaint, it was a legitimate one, and we felt that a disqualification was warranted. Like I said, it's unfortunate, but we gotta follow the rules."
McNeal said there were four French coaches arguing with X Games officials, while she watched the exchange from the finish corral.
"I was so taken aback. I'm not confrontational at all. There was no one there to represent me or argue my case," she said. "People have worn the most ridiculous stuff at the X Games. There are no rules at the X Games. That's why everyone loves the X Games."
But there are rules that specifically address using anything to tighten clothing, which could create less drag and provide an aerodynamic edge.
McNeal said she had worn the hair tie on her right boot — and the Sarah band — through Thursday's qualifying races and Sunday's semifinals. She said the French "were really after anything to get me disqualified from the finals."
"First it was the band, then the hair-tie. Then they wouldn't even tell me why I was being DQ'd," she said.
McNeal said X Games officials called her late Sunday to apologize.
Stiepock, however, was not apologetic. He couldn't remember an athlete getting disqualified for violating a clothing rule in the 16 years of Winter X.
"Considering all that we have done to honor Sarah here, (McNeal's) claim seems odd," he said. "Considering how many other athletes are wearing this banner, it just seems odd."
