January 28th marks the 25th anniversary of the Challenger disaster.
The space shuttle Challenger disintegrated 73 seconds after launch on 28
January 1986, claiming the lives of seven astronauts.
Christa Mcauliffe Will Be Missed At 25th Anniversary Of The Challenger Accident. On the 25th anniversary of the disaster, science reporter Paul Rincon looks back at the events which led up to the accident. According to NASA, it was in part because of the excitement over McAuliffe’s presence on Challenger that the accident had such a significant effect on the nation.
A total of 11 children lost a mom or dad on that January day in 1986. But it’s McAuliffe we remember because she was a mom and a school teacher, a woman being hurled into space to become the face of NASA’s new Teacher in Space program.
