After a basketball life of comebacks to comebacks, the Los Angeles Clippers guard Chauncey Billups committed to the biggest of his career to make a full recovery from a torn Achilles tendon.
"I'll be back," Billups told Yahoo! Sports on the phone. "I'm not ready. I'm not retired. I will definitely be back. This is the story of my career, back, fighting, scrapping and I will play again."
Billups suffered the crack on Monday in Orlando, crumpling to the floor without warning. No collision. No contact. Just like that. He had no tenderness in the Achilles felt prior to the damage, he said. An MRI taken in Cleveland on Tuesday confirmed the tear.
Billups, 35, is a five-time NBA All-Star, a 2004 NBA Finals MVP and is considered one of the great leaders and the winners of his generation. In a career of ups and downs, Billups is convinced that he is equipped to face this difficult path to return to the competition. His contract expires at the end of the season and he will be a free agent this summer.
"I knew when I went down and tried to stand - and I could not feel anything - that this was bad," said Billups. "I had never felt anything like. It was completely non-impact. Nobody touched me. Nobody kicked me. No one was around .... I'm probably still a little bit of shock about this."
